All the moai on Rapa Nui were carved from stone at Rano Raraku. When the moai carving period came to an end, many of these were left scattered around the site. Some were left here on purpose, others werer never delivered, or perhaps had some defect. While you might just see the heads of these particular moai, they have bodies - just buried by decades of soil.
